Are you tired of DeviantArt's pointless new feature sending you notifications to welcome new bots and image thieves to DeviantArt? Well neat!

I know you can technically turn the feature off in your settings, but I find it more comical to let it lead me to the worst users on the platform. I find humor in it. How poorly the whole thing was planned out.

May I interest you in this neat tool that shows you if images posted here are originally from somewhere else!? ;)

Find something sketchy? Take it to Google.com and use Google Lens.

1. Follow the "welcome a new deviant notification", and identify if there is any sketchy content.

Image

2. Go to https://www.google.com/ Click the camera icon to the right of the search bar.

Image

3. Right click and copy the image address or copy the image itself, and drop it into the bar. Or save the image and upload it into here. Which ever is easier. Then search.

Image

4. Confirmed to be an old image floating around. Report it and help clean up the site.

Improving the Art Collection Experience  -  A DeviantArt Suggestion Compilation

This isn't a little favor. It's not a nitpick. It's actually quite a critical element this site needs.
So take this as more of a proposal rather than a suggestion.

Collections on DeviantArt, are a mess.

The Gallery has subfolders, which I don't even find myself really needing, ever! So there is no excuse to not add a subfolder feature to favorites! Super Groups have sub folders, and those are great and work well.
Okay, Listen... A deviant is a lot more likely to have a wider variety of favorite art, verses the variety of art that deviant produces themselves. See? Its so much more important to have subfolders for personal collections!

I shouldn't have to scroll for nearly a minute to get to the collection folder I want when drag and dropping a new favorite to its corresponding folder. I should not need to click next through 126 pages within a folder to find a specific line art or Photoshop brush. We shouldn't have to suffer with crippling lag when scrolling for a favorite painting in our Featured folder. This consequently makes older deviations that were once beloved by people fall into silent obscurity, never being enjoyed again as they get buried by newer collection additions. I don't want to forget any of my favorite deviations! Deviations I worked so hard to find and adored.

Subfolders (or some sort of better organization) are a critical need for a site like this. As I've gotten older my Collections have changed dramatically. Now I'm beginning to collect resources to use in potential future art. However this has quickly become a monumental - nightmare task with just how many types of resources are out there alone! Brushes, textures, PSDs, Line art, Icons - you name it. And of course I want to organize each of those folders by type like - Fantasy, environment, fire, water, animals, effects, and so on....
These different types of resource folders I would need - would be in competition for space by the already existing folders within my Collections which are completely unrelated to resources and vastly split up into specific folders already.
You can't just dump all brushes or icons in a folder for brushes or icons. If you're foolish enough to try, you'll be gritting your teeth and splitting hairs when it comes to the time that you NEED a specific one -
"I know I have a clear, super high res, F2U snowflake icon that would be perfect for this project..... I could have sworn I added it to my icon collection on dA... but I favorited it like.... three years ago...."
Good luck. Prepare to say farewell to hours, if not days of lost productivity in your efforts to find a specific deviation. (If you can't successfully search for it and forgot the file's name.)

However, on the other very infuriating hand, you can't just make hundreds of specific folders. Making a folder for specific themes of icons, brushes, tutorials, or paintings is just as unreasonable. Because it's a huge chore to find a specific folder among the countless other ones stretching your page - and lengthening scrolling time.

Only after one night of starting my journey to discover and collect resources and customization downloads, my collections are dreadful. They are nearly impossible to navigate.
I don't want to dread revisiting my collections, you understand Deviant art? We should enjoy it.
And you as a business - should consider it very important to allow using your website for art / resource collection simple and fun. Simple to revisit too, no matter how many more things a user added to their collections since then.
Understand that it is very important to you as a business to motivate visitors to prefer your site above all others for online collections. Put forth a little more focus in keeping art browsers loyally visiting and utilizing the site for collecting and inspiration seeking. It should be a high interest of yours to keep users on your site, verses 'download and ditch.'

Please do consider this - an art website like this one here, is much more than just a platform for uploading work to show off, or to sell. No it's much more than that.
There is a huge chunk of your userbase that are here to share creative resources.
Last but not least... there is of course the sizeable group of art lovers on dA, that are here to simply favorite artwork and appreciate it because they do not draw themselves.
Art appreciators, who are most likely here with the sole purpose of building a collection to go back to over and over to admire - these folk are being left out. Collections have virtually no comparison of flashy features that other parts of Deviant art has.

This is not an uncommon suggestion. This is not an unreasonable suggestion, this is not controversial, difficult, or useless for dA to consider and work on.
Art creators and art purchasers both alike, will find limitless usefulness in a more organized collection folder.

I don't care if Deviant art makes Collection sub folders CORE only. I would totally understand and not be surprised at all if that ended up being the case. I just want to see you make it happen.
In fact, it would make me consider buying back into CORE again. And would give art collectors a good reason to subscribe to CORE too.

(Adding more features to :bademoticon:   +    Adding features that a wider, or different and new type of users could use   =     :bademoticon:  has more value,  and value to more users.
:bademoticon: having more value   +   value to new users   =    More  Dollar (US)

You could even add more features to Collection personalization... like tags only the collector sees.
The individual user could tag say, a F2U texture they like.... they can tag it as 'brown' , 'stone' , and 'realistic' if they wished to, to make it easier to find in their own favorites. Consider that many deviations have vague artist given tags, or even no tags at all. Searching for a specific known about deviation is a chore when you take into account just how many 'similar' resources are out there competing for the same tags, and many 'enthusiastic' young deviants are known to go flipping nuts with abusing irrelevant description tags - with the idea that it will rake in more potential views.
Being able to attach our own one sided tags for our own use would be mind blowingly useful and revolutional! This one sided tag feature will most likely only be available after the deviation is inside a Collection folder. Removing a favorite might remove it's tags.

Consider making layouts of the Collection folder more customizable, or more potential in general.

Get creative DeviantArt staff, I know you can do it. Listen to this.... optional layouts. Columns, rows, thumbnail sizes/variations, a folder searcher! Come on... this is so do-able.
Seriously… please consider that folder searcher. That would eliminate quite a few issues mentioned issues above, without needing to change much of the "website's bones" at all.

Allow a pinning feature, to pin specific folders for quick access. A shortcut like Windows File Explorer - if you will imagine for me.

This right here is a fantastic addition to those who are worried about keeping their folders in alphabetical order above all else. Pinned folders allow them quick access to folders they are using more frequently without the need to scroll. So if you got dozens of folders from A- Z.... and you happen to be collecting and working with Wallpapers right now - you don't have to torture yourself with awkwardly long scrolling or dragging to reach 'W' for your wallpaper folder.

Other Ideas I came up of at the top of my head would be, perhaps adding the option to make specific folders private, or even sharable among selected friends.
Let me elaborate - The private folder option is pretty self explanatory. It's just a folder that's completely undiscoverable from all but the owner. Useful for folders that are still being worked on and look like a mess. But most importantly, for those who have favorites they would rather just keep secret. The artist of the deviation will still get a notification that their deviation was favorited, but maybe the person who favorited it remains anonymous. I haven't thought too far into that yet. It's up to the individual what's a better idea as far as notifications go for private folder favoriting.

Now let's talk about shared folders. No... this is not like a Group. It's not a pseudo group either in the slightest. This is just a chosen folder that you can give permission to a selected friend, or a handful of friends, to add content to. You can choose rather the said shared folder is private to you and your friend's viewing only, or viewable to public like typical. These shared folders aren't that big of a deal, but they might prove useful to friends with shared tastes, share resources, or collaborate on artwork. Shared folders eliminate the need to copy and send links back and forth, or log into a chat source like Discord to share a picture. Some may raise a hand and to say 'Notes" already allow this in a way. While true, sort of... having a shared folder is easier for the benefit of having a big open space to look at all your past shared things. And you can casually toss additions into the folder without trigging a notification to other people every time you do so - letting share members discover new additions on their own, on their own time.

Eclipse is right around the corner. This is huge! One of the largest changes to DeviantArt ever. While the update is prioritizing appearance and aiming for minimalism, I'm hoping this update gives functionality plenty of attention too. Before Eclipse permanently rolls out, I officially ask DeviantArt to smooth out Collections some how. Surprise us. It could be subfolders, tags for individual favorites, layouts, or Collection folder searchability... I don't mind which ever one gets picked over the other.... all I ask, is for you to leap this site into something real fun and enjoyable to use and browse. Collecting has been rather the same since the beginning, and has gotten stale.
Let us kick off the New Year , of the New DeviantArt , with a fast , organized , and PRODUCTIVE approach!

((This is a copy of an official suggestion that has already been submitted to the DeviantArt Suggestions forum.))

((The forum has an average of less than ten visitors on a discussion, even less comments. Even lesser than that are any staff members. But other than that, the main reason I'm sharing a 'suggestion for DeviantArt' - to DeviantArt, is to inspire other users and spark conversation between them. With that said, I politely ask for readers to not comment below for me to, "Go post this to a feedback ticket" or "Submit your suggestion to 'blah' ". ))

Is it just me, or have the developers actually screwed up the default Deviantart real bad?

I log off for a week or so, and come back to the site looking completely whack.

We only have maybe a few weeks left to squeeze the last bit of nostalgia left from the old green - compact - detailed - cozy Deviant art before all users are forced to switch to Eclipse for good.

It's a little surprising to see the dark color theme of Eclipse appears to be suddenly leaking out into the default website.

Inkscape

4 min read

I'm so ashamed that I haven't given Inkscape attention sooner!
Dare I say Inkscape is a THOUSAND TIMES BETTER than Adobe Illustrator could ever wave a finger at.
I think I'm even going to completely abandon Illustrator and even use Photoshop less.

Working with vectors is so satisfying. I'm excited.

Check out the  gallery on Inkscape's website.
If you haven't used Inkscape yet, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Inkscape is completely FREE. Yes, that's right, free! And it's opensource, always being updated by loyal hardworking developers. Consider supporting this amazing resource. Having artist tools this advanced, open source, and worked on by thousands of people is awesome, and should become a more popular idea.
If you download Inkscape, I also recommend getting yourself some free goodies to practice and play around with - that meaning, go to OpenClipart

I know, random journal from me after so many months of inactivity. I was just so happy to share my discovery to not share it. By no means is Inkscape new, or unknown. But it does seem to be sadly overlooked. I heard it mentioned time to time for years, and thought nothing of it as I obsessed over the obscenely overpriced and overrated tools like Adobe. Not that Adobe isn't good. It's great. But it isn't the BEST or ONLY option around. It wasn't till I saw what was being made with Inkscape, and gave it a try myself that I was immediately immersed in it for hours.
I was so frustrated my version of Photosohop played stupid about opening SVG files. I had to search around for any program that could. Illustrator could, but I didn't have it installed at the time. And it was then how I broke down and added Inkscape to my program list, and learned to love it. I'm still learning, and there is a TON to learn with this tool. It's massive. Thankfully the download includes tutorials. And I'm also familiar with learning by experimenting. That's how I learned Photoshop after all, hours of clueless tinkering and experimentation.

Have fun!

Apparently journals written in Eclipse mode do not transfer over to default.... weird. So I'm reposting this.

I want people to relax and breathe for a second. This is a beta test, okay?
    It could possibly be just
bare bones of what "Eclipse" will be, or maybe not. But the what is important is that possibilities are still open. Don't get me wrong, I will be just as upset as the rest of you if they entirely remove custom profile coding and embedding / etcetera. For one... many folks here actually paid money for written code, profile dolls, and other custom widgets /addons, let's not forget that crucial detail. And on the other hand even better yet, many Deviants here made their money by creating and selling these mentioned things. Deviantart users loved sharing custom codes and profile decor, lots of little things that made each profile personal and original. This is what made Deviantart brilliantly stand out amongst all the other art websites floating about, its customizability and personalization.

I was very excited to hear that Deviantart was finally catching up to the times and releasing a "dark theme", called "Eclipse". From my understanding, it was going to give us a choice to simply darken the existing interface of the website. And when the announcements in my inbox mentioned making changes to our widgets and features, I assumed that would be additional to existing widgets. I have very sensitive eyes. I use Google Chrome extensions to apply dark themes to my other frequented websites, but none did Deviantart any justice. It was simply too complex of a website to reskin everything, especially with each CORE profile being unique. It never looked right. Making this website a new uniform color is quite a challenge when most profile decor does not take into account anything else other than DA's traditional 'green' at the time they were created. This is a bold task for anyone to take. Deviantart is classically known to be affiliated with the colors gray and green, since it was first founded. I watched it evolve on my own account for 10 years now. And even a few years before I decided to register.

Making our pages original and personal, has come a long way. You've added features, and you have taken some away. You have also increased the subscription cost. You greatly increased the cost, took good features away and gave us little reason to continue being billed these last few years. You let the site remain stale for quite some time. But at last, it's getting a huge makeover, it appears. However I can't help but remain weary. I sure hope this makeover uncovers not just a few new cool useful features, but remains loyal to current existing ones we grew to love. Understandably some can not be simply copied and pasted over to 'Eclipse', but perhaps they could be adapted to at least call back to our traditional layouts.
Individuality is essential, especially to a website for artists!

As it right stands now, (and I repeat, I understand this is a demo) .... but it stands now from what I can see.... essential gems from our current profile options are missing. No custom boxes. No Image embedding. No custom text. No HTML/CSS. The widgets are even more restricted to where they may or may not be moved around. And Eclipse ruins other Deviant user's page layouts and their painstakingly crafted code / images.
     This is an unacceptable change.
I kind of get it. I'm trying to see it from Deviantart's perspective. Maybe this was your intention all along. You want to put more focus on the ART, rather than the little profile tricks and ramblings. BUT... some users used the advantage of personalized profile coding to really bring the best potential in showing off their work, sometimes the first thing you see when you visit their page. One user I witnessed for example was creative enough to cut a deviation in half and then image embed it into their top widgets, making it massive and stretch across both sides of the page, dominating the visitor's screen. And that was amazing! That was wickedly clever, props to them for pulling it off, making it all line up right and seamlessly.
    But I digress.
Perhaps it was just not possible to migrate these things into 'Eclipse'. I doubt that though. I eagerly wait to see what will be unlocked when we are allowed to edit some of these widgets in the future.

I'll give some honest pros I did find about Eclipse:

- It feels
cleaner, I guess. less cluttered.
- Certain things appear
crisper, larger, and more polished. Larger is good in some areas, awkward and barren in others though.
- I'm happy about the addition of
page covers. It's easy to use, anyone can upload something to it. However, I think this is Eclipse's way of substituting for the removal of unique profile coding and customization. This simply can't compare. Besides, it feels a tad bit like we are crossing over to Facebook / Twitter territory here. Page covers are convenient yes, but there is sacrifice in our options.
- I kind of like the new way badges are displayed. They're less of a secret now. They're finally out there, doing something.
- I
LOVE how you guys FINALLY made it easier to give llamas back, officially. Finally I don't need to keep turning to Tampermonkey extensions.
- I like the new popup summary addition when you hover over avatars and names. This has potential. It needs some aesthetic work, but I dig it so far!
- There appears to be no limit on how many different folders or collections you may feature on your page. I like this. But it needs a option for thumbnail sizes. These current thumbnails are HUGE!
- I really like the new 'posts' tab. This is a clever addition. Organized and attractive. A welcome addition!
- Statistics and what has been redone with it is a welcome addition.
- The font used in this theme is all over; attractive, may I point out. It's new, modern and easy on the eyes. (Apparently an uncommon opinion.) Easier to read. No more squinting. It appears cleaner and less smushed.
- Browsing my featured favorites has a very noticeable performance improvement. It's faster now and less 'sticky'. When before if I tried to browse my general favorites, it would lag like sin! Stop responding even!
- The gallery has more room committed to showing off the actual art, not constricting it to thumbnails that squeeze into small uniform boxes. This will take time to get use to, but I think I'll love it with a little time.
- The addition of comment likes are neat. Again, sort of just shadowing other media sites with this one here (
granted late as hell),  but it's a welcome and relatively harmless change. I approve.
- And what's this? You can 'love' devations? Doesn't having the existing 'favorites' kind of over shadow this? Meh. No harm done here I guess. It's cool. I get what it's for. It intends to function like Youtube's suggestion algorithm, accept with this you actually have control over what is suggested to you. I have yet to thoroughly try this out.
- We can see who favorited a deviation easier now, including deviations that are not our own. That's pretty neat. That's about all I have to say on that matter.
- Full screen mode for deviations was an unexpected but greatly welcomed feature! Big fan.
- I
LOVE the changes done to the deviation watch inbox. This is greatly appreciated. I don't have to squint to see incoming deviation thumbnails now. I like how watched deviants and my watched deviant groups are lumped together in one easy spot now too. It's more attractive this way. I'm a little confused why I can't view deviantart announcement notifications though in this mode. Only feedback.
- Adding a thumbnail to feedback notifications is nifty. Sometimes I'll get a comment on something very old and have no idea what the hell a person is talking about anymore. Lol.
- The estimated time to read that was added to the journal entry creator is cool.

Parting critiques / suggestions / cons:

- I hate the right side of the user page change. It removed the perfectly fine, large image of our deviant ID. I also find it a poor move to make visitors have to click on the 'About' in order to read the flavor text now. That's silly. Nearly no one is going to do that. This feature may as well be removed considering this. Maybe this will be better when wiget editing is added soon.
- You can add your journal widget to your front page, however, you cannot see the journal's custom skin from here anymore. Or at all. That's a disappointing and pointless thing to remove. Yeah, it's more uniform looking and matches other widgets now... but, eh? Not a big fan of removing the ability to see custom journal skins.
- Not a big fan of the total makeover of the top left of the user page either. For years, that was where our tagline, name, age, years as a user and much more crucial information was. These said things are now rather stirred all about in different places.
- I can't help but imagine many users will be uncomfortable with pageview and watcher stats being in large bold font right beside their avatar, first thing you see when you visit the user. This may make some shy artists feel less valued, as these numbers are so in your face compared to the way they use to be. It makes it feel a lot more competitive to have large numbers by names (kind of feels like Twitter as far as follower count goes) .... symbolically measuring each person's success as an artist. (
Anyone remember the fella emote with the sunglasses when you turned off page view stats? I remember that.)
- Clicking onto a deviation, I noticed immediately that descriptions are quite broken with the new unexpected 'Eclipse' format. This is kind of not too much of a surprise in hindsight when taking into consideration a lot of "plz accounts", emotes, and page decor was made with only the old format in mind. Tags for deviations are also too big and distracting now. Thumbcodes are still being worked on. Rearrangement of the layout for some deviation statistics and text is strange... but it has potential.

Suggestions for you:

 -
Don't be a fool and leave out page code / personalization. It may be difficult to include with a total overhaul like this that you guys worked so hard on. But it is absolutely crucial you preserve this long established and expected feature. This is what makes and breaks your sales for CORE membership!
Yeah I know, big surprise, no one cares about the little pointless forgettable features like..... clicking on a deviation and it's already full size, a small deduction in print prices. And
the offer of no ads is left completely unimpressive when you consider the blatant reality that AdBlock already offers this, for free.
_________________________________________________________

And a message to other deviants who may be reading this with seething hatred for these changes, or experiencing simple uncertainty or disappointment; This is only progress!

This is not a finished or 'set in stone' yet. Most of us observing Eclipse here, it is safe to say are fellow Beta Testers. We should all know better than to get so hopeless or angry at the drop of a hat over this simple demo.
Deviantart is asking us for our help, our input. Let's deliver just that! So rather than flying off the handle and typing one sentence in all caps about how screwed deviantart is, and that,"you're deactivating your account and leaving now".... perhaps you could at least attempt to express your opinions and concerns. Give constructive critique, like an artist is supposed to be familiar to giving and receiving. And before you reply with, "Deviantart staff never listens to its community!" Touché.... this is pretty true, I can not deny that they have rather selective hearing. It is a business after all. But what I can guarantee you is,
there is no hope for change to be made if you choose to remain unheard.

I completely understand the immediate disappointment, when you excitedly switched over to the new 'mythical' Eclipse mode, only to find all the work in your page was seemingly erased like it was never there. Hours of careful writing, browsing assets, selecting, copying, and dropping in code / assets / link embedments, all that collectively made your page unique. Your own little individualized haven...discovered to be cut and dressed into a rather cookie cut uniform with one just one update. Some of those assets you may have spent hours carefully drawing and resizing to fit just right. And some of you may have even spent cash or points to have your 'page dolls', 'stamps', and 'icons' personally commissioned. You may have had "to do" lists in a custom box on your page.

It's a downgrade to see it all gone right now in 'Eclipse', I know. But there's still room for additions and improvement. There is potential in Eclipse. We got to give this new alternative version of deviantart a fair chance. I see some good in it. Let's not give up and throw in the towel because some of our favorite old features aren't present at this very moment.
It's tremendously obvious it's got parts still being worked on when you see "
coming soon" sprinkled throughout the redone widgets. Folks, you should be at least a little excited. Change is scary, but let's not forget, this is the largest overhaul deviantart has had is AGES.

The excitement swells; will they screw this up beyond expectations? Or will they blow us away?

Let's throw this a few biscuits and wait, observe it.
